Cindy Shang is a performing violinist and pianist who graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in Film and Music Education. During her time at Northwestern University, she studied with renowned violinists Gerardo Ribeiro and Desirée Ruhstrat and was a member of a chamber quartet coached by the Dover Quartet. She has played the piano and violin for close to two decades and has served as a violinist in orchestras such as the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, and the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra.
Cindy has taught band, choir, and orchestra and worked as a full-time music teacher in a Chicago public school. She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Orchestral Conducting from Northern Illinois University. She has experience working with school students of all ages, ranging in age from 4 to 18 years old. She also teaches adult students.
Her past teaching experience includes the string programs at Oakton Elementary, Dawes Elementary, and Walker Elementary Schools. She has led orchestras at Chute Middle School and Lane Tech College Prep High School. She has conducted concerts for high school orchestras and built a music program from ground up at a local Chicago school. Cindy takes pride in guiding students to discover their full potential and expanding students’ musical knowledge through exposure to wider repertoire, international performance techniques, and a variety of musical genres. Her philosophy of teaching prioritizes musical sensitivity, contextual understanding of the music, and the ability to “play” around on the instrument and improvise! She can’t wait to meet you and help you discover your potential.
