Gabe Roethle is a graduate of Lawrence University, where he studied violin performance with Wen-Lei Gu, and is currently pursuing a Masters of Music degree in World Music Performance at NIU. Gabe is a proponent of studying multiple styles of music, combining classical studies with improvisation styles such as jazz and various fiddle traditions from around the world.
Gabe has performed as a soloist with the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra, the Green Bay Civic Orchestra, and has played in several recitals of solo and chamber music, including a recital featuring music of King Crimson and Frank Zappa. Other than violin, Gabe plays several instruments from around the world, including guitar, Balinese percussion, and shamisen. Gabe’s teaching approach takes inspiration from rote-based methods practiced in Balinese gamelan music, which form a holistic and multi-sensory approach to learning and performing music. Most importantly, Gabe believes that the role of the music teacher is to help students develop the tools necessary to create music that they enjoy.
